Alkaline Water: Its Importance
Alkaline water? What's so special about alkaline water? Water’s just water, isn’t it? But is it? If you felt thirsty while you were walking through the woods and you had the choice of drinking from a clear, fast-flowing stream or a stagnant, muddy puddle, wouldn’t you choose the stream? If I handed you a glass of water taken from the toilet, wouldn’t you be horrified and refuse to drink it?
Yet we don’t really think about the quality of the water we drink on a daily basis. Tap water is supposedly clean, but it contains a host of contaminants, not least of which is the chlorine put there to ensure all the other stuff in the water doesn’t make you ill!
Bottled water is often just tap water by another name, and even water that did come from a natural spring originally may have been sitting around in its plastic bottle, leaching nasty chemicals, for two or three years before you get to drink it.
It’s not just the source of your drinking water that’s important, or the amount that you drink, but the amount you absorb and utilise. You can be drinking a couple of litres of water a day and still be dehydrated if that water isn’t getting into your cells. Many of the seemingly-unrelated ailments that afflict so many people today are a result of the body being in an over-acidic state, because good quality water is not reaching the insides of cells to wash away acidic metabolic waste.
Do you suffer from any of the following?
- Acid reflux
- Asthma
- Arthritis
- Constipation
- Diabetes (Type I and Type II)
- Fibromyalgia
- Gout
- Low energy
- Migraines
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Osteoporosis
This is just a small sample of conditions that result from your cells being overly acidic, conditions that can be alleviated by drinking the right water.
So, what is the right water? Melting snow or glacier water runs over rocks, collecting minerals on the way. This is alkaline water, high in active hydrogen (making the water highly antioxidant, gobbling up free radicals), and has a much lower surface tension as a result of the way the water molecules clump together in smaller clusters. (You know how pond-skaters and other insects can walk on the surface of water? That's surface tension).
This ‘micro-clustering’ of the water molecules is what the makes the water so hydrating; to paraphrase a famous advert, it reaches the parts other waters don’t reach. Many studies have found that the communities living in these mountainous regions and drinking these alkaline waters have much better health and live longer than the rest of the world.
It’s obviously impossible for the rest of us to get access to that water, but we can re-create those glacial conditions using the process of ionisation. Michael Faraday pioneered this process in the 1800s, whereby he split water into its constituent hydrogen and oxygen. Today, alkaline ionised water is produced by passing electrical current to an electrolysis chamber containing platinum-coated titanium electrodes. As the water flows through the chamber, the electrolysis process separates the water into acid and alkaline fractions. It imparts an electrical charge to the final product and creates free hydrogen.
How Ionised Alkaline Water can help you
There are five major reasons to drink alkaline ionised water.
- It’s a powerful antioxidant, providing extra electrons that neutralise free radicals. Free radicals are associated with disease and premature aging.
- It increases blood oxygenation as the hydroxyl ions (oxygen molecules with an extra electron) produced by the ionisation process donate their spare electron to neutralise free radicals. This gives you increased energy and increased mental alertness.
- It helps balance the body’s pH. The abundance of negative ions increases the alkaline minerals in the blood, such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. These bicarbonate buffers help to reduce the acidic internal environment.
- The smaller size of the water molecule clusters improves the hydrating qualities of the water.
- The fact that ionised water can penetrate cells so much more effectively gives it extraordinary detoxifying properties. Acidic metabolic wastes are flushed out of cells.
